History

Sutton Bowls Club was initially founded in 1957 and for many years provided a strong community focus and facilities for local residents, also welcoming members from outlying towns and villages. It formed an essential part of village life for over 60 years, but sadly closed in 2012 due largely to changes in local demographics.

However, in 2017 a group of local residents formed a working group to re-establish the club with the objective of re-opening for the 2018 season. The green was completely overgrown and the club house suffering from extreme neglect. Interest was keen from residents from Sutton and neighbouring villages and after a series of fundraising and promotional activities, the club re-opened as planned in 2018.

By 2019 due to continuing community support and increased membership, the Club was once again participating in friendly league matches and providing facilities to a wide age range including absolute beginners and experienced players. Sadly, Covid then curtailed all further activities until the Club opened in May 2022 following extensive community work to upgrade all facilities.

Ethos & Community

The ethos of the Club is all about participation, inclusivity and fun. It has a very strong sense of community and regular visits take place from residents of the local care home.

Coaching and taster sessions are also planned to encourage participation in the sport by young people from primary school age.

All of the improvements to the Club are thanks to the hard work and support from our members who give up their time and expertise to constantly improve the Club whilst keeping it true to it's close community focus.

The Club has been fortunate to obtain funding from a number of sources including Sussex Community Foundation, Chichester District Council and Sport England. It has also benefited from some generous personal donations.
